PILBARA OUTBACK SAFARIS
PILBARA
THAT BIG! THAT OLD!
The Pilbara Region is huge, at approximately 500,000 square kilometres. It sits in Western Australia just south of the Kimberley Region, with the Indian Ocean to the west and the Northern Territory to the east. The Pilbara is one of the oldest landscapes on Earth (approx. 2.5 Billion years old).
First explored in the 1860's by white fella-already known (40,000 years) by the Aborigines, then followed by European Settlers, Afghan Camel Drivers, Chinese miners, Japanese Pearlers.
WEATHER
The Pilbara has a tropical semi-desert climate with temperatures ranging from 0 - 48 C. Visiting the Pilbara at different times of the year offers different advantages. Winter days are warm and clear for hiking at Karijini but the water is cold. Many visit over Summer to enjoy the gorge swimming and warm nights. The day temperature, while high provides a dry heat still suitable for hiking with lots of water consumed and rests taken.
CYCLONES
Our biggest threat is the tropical cyclone over summer. Weather conditions can change quite rapidly. Some cyclone winds can get up to 250km per hour with lots of rain. So keep an eye on our weather.
KARIJINI
Karijini National Park is Western Australia's second largest national park, covering 6,300 sq kilometres. It contains some of the most spectacular gorges in Australia. Some say it is the best National Park they have explored during their Aussie visit. Some gorges are easy and peaceful for the family; others up to 100 metres deep require ropes, wetsuits and an extreme sense of adventure with many other gorges filling the gap required by the average adventure seeker. The colours and scenery are a photographers dream.
