Can I fit a DVD player to my EMV equipped Soarer?

Yes. I have also developed a mod to watch while driving.(naughty naughty). If that mod is done i cannot be responsible for any incidents that may happen as the EMV screen becomes very distracting!!!!.  The trip computer functions are not altered when this mod is performed as i originally thought it did. I also give details to install a small toggle switch to allow the safety circuit to work if it has to(say if you get pulled over).

Back seat removed showing the computer area. TV tuner module is located on R/H/S.

Plug from TV tuner module

The following info is for the install of a mobile DVD player. It can also be used for just about any other A/V product but make sure that the video system out is NTSC. PAL products will not work. The product I am fitting in this page is a Sansui unit from Strathfield in Australia which has the plus of aux in for a game console or tv tuner.

1:Push the driver's seat and passenger seat  forward

2:Remove the back seat lower squab. Give it a good tug (eeek..) it should pop up and draw forward and remove.

3:On the driver's side where all the harnesses go into you will see a line of modules the one closest to the left is the TV tuner module. This is the module we will need to look at. You will see a single plug directly on the top of the module so carefully remove the plug from the module and lay on top.

4: Make up your harness. That is, tape up the audio lead, the video lead, and the 3mm twin (i supplied) for the power to the DVD unit. Join in the power  plug for the DVD (this unit came with a choke fitted which is a good idea).

5: Now one end of the harness is patched into the TV tuner plug. Simply cut off the RCA connectors from the harness (not the DVD end!!) and strip back enough shield and core to patch into the TV tuner module plug. The colours are the following:

12VDC ACC POWER         GREY PIN 1
12VDC GND                      WHITE BLACK TRACE PIN 25
VIDEO IN + SIGNAL          LIGHT BLUE PIN 8 PLUG SIDE
VIDEO IN - GND                BROWN/WHITE TRACE PIN 22 PLUG SIDE
AUDIO IN + LEFT SIDE     GREEN PIN 9
AUDIO IN + RIGHT SIDE   RED PIN 10
AUDIO GROUNDS X 2       THE AUDIO REQUIRES A FLEXIBLE APPROACH. FOR THIS PARTICULAR UNIT ONLY THE POSITIVES REQUIRED CONNECTION. SOME UNITS MAY REQUIRE THE GROUNDS TO BE CONNECTED TO THE SHIELDS FURTHER UP THE HARNESS. ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE IS TO JOIN THE AUDIO NEGATIVES TO GROUND FOR THE EMV. FINALLY BALANCED LINE TRANSFORMERS CAN BE MADE UP AND USED. TRY IT AND SEE HOW IT GOES!!!

6: Tape up the harness and poke back under the shroud DON'T PLUG BACK INTO THE TV TUNER MODULE  (THIS IS OPTIONAL THOUGH I DON'T SEE THE NEED SO I DIDN'T)

7:Run harness across and up to grommet behind back seat squab. Undo the 3 12mm bolts and pull up the back squab

8:Slice grommet and put harness through. (IT'S UNDER THE INSULATION LAYER) This is easier with 2 people.

9: Take the infra-red receiver and start to run it from above the rear view mirror next to the mini visor on the left hand side. use velcro to stick it to the hood lining and run it back above the door and down and finally through the grommet and finally meet up with the other harness. Fit back the top squab and refit bolts.

10: To mount the DVD unit use the supplied mounts I screwed the unit under the rear shelf. Connect up the harness to the connections on the back of the DVD. Carefully trim back the boot trim to slide around the unit and back into place.

11: Don't forget to fit the lower squab back. Turn on the ign key check if the DVD fires up. The colour system may have to be set to NTSC. This unit uses NTSC as default so it was strictly plug and play. Use the remote from the front of the car. Press the "TV" button on the tape unit and you should have DVD screensaver....YIPPEE!!!

12: Last part of the install is to allow the screen to operate while moving. This step may be considered illegal in some states and no responsibility will be taken for the following info. 3 mods are required.

13: The EMV unit needs to be removed. This is covered in other parts of the ALSC FAQ.

14:There are 3 grey plugs which where connected directly to the back of the EMV unit, The two plugs to the right, 1 large (26 pin) and one small (16 pin). The 3 mods are, a grounding of PARK BRAKE wire, The NSS wire needs IGN power and the SPEED SENSOR wire needs to be run through a switch (optional). The switch allows the safety system to operate if required. Cut the PARK BRAKE wire (BLACK pin 5 small plug) and run the plug side to ground. Pin 13 or 26 are grounds on the 26 pin plug (WHITE/BLACK TRACE) a small piece of wire is required.

15: Cut the NSS wire (BLACK/YELLOW TRACE) and run the plug side to IGN. pin 25 is ign on the larger plug (BLACK/RED TRACE). A small piece of wire is required.

16: Cut the SPD wire (PINK pin 13 small plug). Insulate them well. If you want the safety circuit to work I suggest a small length of twin cable and a toggle switch in the cup holder. Join the wires up and the safety circuit works.......GET IT???!!

17: Fit the EMV unit back remember you undid 7 plugs!!!

THAT'S IT A WORKING DVD PLAYER IN A SOARER!! WITH A WORKAROUND FOR THE VISION SAFETY CIRCUIT AND TO TOP IT OFF THE TRIP COMPUTER FUNCTIONS STILL WORK....!!
