Home |
Wangaratta is one of twenty-three dioceses of the Anglican Church of Australia. It has twenty-five parishes (with eighty-one
congregations) under the pastoral and administrative care of Bishop John Parkes. There are twenty-nine active and forty
other clergy associated with and permitted to officiate in the Diocese. The Diocese of Wangaratta was founded in 1902. It covers
the very beautiful north eastern part of the state of Victoria. It extends from just north of the outer suburbs of Melbourne through to Northern Albury, which is over the state border in New South Wales, and from the fruit-growing areas of central Victoria to the start of the Snowy River country. The Diocese is mainly rural but forty-five percent of the population lives in the cities of Shepparton, Albury/Wodonga and Wangaratta itself, which are steadily growing in population. The Diocesan newspaper The Anglican Advocate is published bi-monthly, from February to December. Parliament of the World's Religions The Parliament of the World’s Religions is the world’s largest global interreligious event, held once every five years in a different city. The next Parliament will be held in Melbourne from December 3 to 9. The Melbourne Parliament will bring together more than 8,000 people from around Australia and across the world, including renowned spiritual, religious and political leaders. The theme of the 2009 Parliament, “Make a World of Difference; Hearing each other, Healing the earth”, reflects the urgent need for religious and spiritual communities and all people of goodwill to act on their concerns.More information can be found at: Parliament of Religions. Environment Commission In May 2009 Synod passed the following motion: The Anglican Diocese of Wangaratta resolves to establish a program to encourage the environmentally sustainable stewardship of its natural resources, and invites the participation of all its components in this endeavour and to this end request Bishop in Council to form a Committee of the council, to establish its membership and request it to report to council on a regular basis. Dr David Mitchell's argument in support of this resolution can be found here: 2009 Synod Resolution on the Environment.
