So when you went gah-gah over Knut's baby photos from Berlin zoo, you probably didn't realise that his relatives are being wiped out by our profligate use of energy. The "ice-free summer" is a real possibility for the arctic in the next few years, and polar bears depend on sea ice to hunt and survive.

The most obscene example of our urge to destroy nature is the V8 4WD, spewing out tonnes of noxious gases, while crushing the very vegetation which we need to clean the CO2 from the atmosphere.
