hebrews 10:26 (a short verse that says a lot)

Have you ever wondered about Heb 10:26? I have.

Heb 10:26 For if we sin 264wilfully1596 after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Let us look at the two Greek words for sin and wilfully

G264 Perhaps from G1 (as a negative particle) and the base of G3313; properly to miss the mark (and so not share in the prize), that is, (figuratively) to err, especially (morally) to sin: - for your faults, offend, sin, trespass.

G1595; voluntarily: - wilfully, willingly.

It could then read "If we miss the mark voluntarily.".........

Every sin  really is voluntary. If we lie, it is not spontaneous? Every sin as we know of recorded in the Word was voluntary. From Adam's sin, he was not deceived.  David's adultery with Bathsheba. He plotted and schemed to cover it up, eventually plotting the death of her husband Uriah. And what about Peter denying Jesus. Three times!

If we take this scripture in light of many explanations put before us by the so called learned men of today, non of us could stand in the presence of God. Making the death of Jesus of non effect.

We therefore establish the majority of sin is voluntary, and if we sin after we come to know Jesus, there remains no more sacrifice for sin. This is not what this verse is saying!

We have to understand that it was written to the Hebrews and must be read with this in mind. Now I could explain this verse with a couple of verses, but some doubters may not be able to receive it. So bear with me.

To understand this verse and much of Paul's writing we must understand the work of Jesus.

After reading the small study in the table below, follow the arrow on the left to finish explanation Hebrews 10:26

    1. 1 Jn 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Read the first part "He that committeth sin is of the devil". Now I've got to ask you, do you commit sin? Read the rest of the verse. Do you think Jesus came just to forgive your sin? You could have your sin forgiven under the Old Testament.  He came to destroy sin!

    2. Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: Jesus came to condemn sin not us. There was in the Old Covenant forgiveness of sin, through the sacrifices and sin offerings. But these could not take away the consciousness of sin.
    3. Heb 10:2  For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. Can Jesus do this?  Can he really clear your conscience from sin? YES That is exactly what He came to do.

    4. Heb 9:14  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Again I say, Jesus didn't come just to forgive sin. This is the mistake even the most seasoned ministers make. If Jesus came only to forgive us of our sin,  then he would only be a replacement for the animal sacrifices. We can only be forgiven for sins past.

    5. Rom 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;  This is the part achieved by animal sacrifices, the forgiveness of sin. The word propitiation means that Jesus' atoning death fulfilled the sacrifice required for sin

    6. Heb 10:4  For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. The words take away mean to cut off or remove. Sacrifices can only  atone for sin, they cannot remove it!

    7. 1 Jn 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. The words " take away"  here mean to lift off; to weigh anchor. I see it now that in Him we have no sin.

And in him is no sin

    1. Heb7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;   Now we all know God is separate from sinners isn't he? If that's the case why would the spirit of God dwell in me if I am a sinner? Remember whoever commits sin is of the devil.

    2. Rom 8:11  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Remember God is separate from sin and we're in him and in him is no sin

    3. 1 Jn 4:13  Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

    4. Romans 8:9-10  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.  And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. This is the crux of the Gospel message, they that are in the flesh cannot please God. Everything is by faith. Do you have the Spirit of Christ? ref Lk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? Have you asked?

    5. Gal 3:2  This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Now if you ask for the Holy Spirit, do you believe that you will receive? If so then you ask by faith and you receive by faith freely.

    6. 2 Cor 13:5  Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?  Read Titus Chapter 1

My belief is we cannot sin if we are born of God. Because the body is dead because of sin. It is no longer I that sin but sin that dwells in me. This is the mystery of iniquity. Remember Jesus came to destroy the works of the Devil not us. 1 Jn 3:9  Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

What about Heb 10:26 How can we sin willfully if you say we cannot sin?

    1. Rom 4:15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.  You cannot sin without a law

    2. Rom 5:13  (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. ) (Second witness for the above scripture. You cannot sin in Christ because there is no law.)

    3. 1 Jn 3:4  Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (No law no transgression third witness)

    4. 2 Cor 3:13  And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: (This is talking about the law given at Sinai where Moses had to put a vail over his face, which is now abolished)

    5. 2 Cor 3:7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: Engraven in stones, the Ten Commandments was to be done away.

    6. Col 2:14  Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; (Some who desire to be under the law say this verse is not talking about the moral law. Really?  The above verse shows the law to be taken out of the way was written and engraven on stone.

    7. Heb 10:9  Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. (Took away the first covenant to establish the second. You cannot mix them together) this is what wine speaks of in the bible. Read Lk 5:36-39

Jn 1:17 For the law was given by Moses,

but

grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

  1. Rom 6:14  For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

  2. Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: The emphasized part of this verse stood out as I was reading. Why would Paul infer that we cannot save ourselves? There are only two means of justification in the Bible. Righteousness through the law and righteousness by faith. Only one is possible

  3. Rom 3:24  Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

  4.  Gal 2:17-18 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.  For if I build again the things which I destroyed, (place myself back under the law) I make myself a transgressor. (A sinner)

Gal 5:4  Christ is become of no effect unto you,

whosoever of you are justified by the law;

ye are fallen from grace.

This is the most important verse in this study. You can not be under the law and under grace they contradict one another. One is man justifying himself. The other is God justifying us.

Here then is the explanation for Heb 10:26. We cannot sin because we are not under the law, ( for where there is no law there is no transgression) But are under grace and therefore we are freely justified by His grace. This redemption is only through faith through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. If I desire to be under the law I become a sinner.

This ends up being my choice and therefore we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

This attitude of keeping the law , in effect becomes an insult to God by inferring that the sacrificed Lamb of God was insufficient. And other requirements (law keeping) are needed to secure our redemption.
Heb 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
