THE REGION |
Wandoo Farm Wines is located at Capercup 15 kms west of Duranillin in the Beaufort Wine Region of the South West of Western Australia.
The region enjoys a Mediterranean type climate of warm summer days usually followed by the cool evening breezes of the Albany Doctor.
At the beginning of the nineteenth century the viticulture industry in Western Australia was centred around the Swan Valley and the Upper and Central Great Southern Regions.
Recent recognition of wines from these regions at wine tasting and shows is becoming very evident. These regions will, in the not too distant future, regain their positions as the States premium wine growing districts.
We believe the area between the Darling Escarpment and the Albany Highway has the potential to produce interesting wines. The price of land, availability of good water and climatic conditions creates a good economic environment for the production of quality fruit.

The vines are grown on the well drained gravelly loam soils of the upper regions of the Lake Towerrinning Valley. When necessary the vines are watered by the 1,200 year old waters of the ancient Beaufort palaeochannel.
A feature of the vineyard today is that there are no CCA (Chrome, Creosote, Arsenic) treated trellis posts, fungicide sprays or insecticides used except common sulphur, making the vineyard semi-organic.
All grapes at Wandoo Farm are selectively hand-picked in the crisp cool early autumn air of late March or early April.
The original 3 ha of vines were established in 1997 with the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Verdelho.
The initial vintages were made at Porongurup Winery near Mount Barker. Since March 2003 all wines have been made at Harris River Estate Winery near Collie.
In October 2000 an additional 5 ha of vineyard was planted to produce Marsanne, Viognier, Sangiovese, Zinfandel (Primitivo) and Tamminga.
Several rows were also planted in 2000 for experimental purposes. These include Canada Muscat, Fragolla Muscatella (Strawberry Muscat), Pinot Noir, Barbera, Merlot and the Malbec variety planted near Moodiarrup in 1926 by my German grandfather, Rudolph Schinzig. |

2001 Verdelho
Straw in colour with green hints, the 2001 Verdelho has a fruit driven nose showing peaches and pears, a long palate with stonefruit characteristics and a little sweetness to balance the acid.
2002 Verdelho
Very similar to the 2001 vintage, possibly a little drier with a slightly higher alcohol. Not the traditional sweet dessert style Verdelho.
2002 Cabernet Sauvignon
Burgundy in colour. Minty, herbaceous, blackcurrent aromas. The palate has blackcurrant fruit and fine grained tannins with fruit sweetness on the finish. Winner of a Bronze Medal at the 2003 Western Australian Wine Show. Good to drink now or cellar for 2 years.
2002 Shiraz
Vibrant deep purple in colour. Licorice and spicy pepper varietal characters on the nose. The palate has ripe berry fruits complimented by subtle tannins with a fruit driven finish. |

2003 Verdelho-Viognier
The long awaited blend of the best Verdelho and the French variety Viognier. The first of the vintage by winemaker Camilla Vote and bottled at Harris River Estate, Collie. This is an interesting blend that offers intense passionfruit, mango and kiwi fruit characteristics. The palate is full and round with well balanced acid. The wine exhibits good length with the tropical flavours of the aroma exploding in the mouth.
2003 Cabernet-Shiraz
Another interesting blend crafted by Camilla Vote from Harris River Estate. Vintaged in 20% new French oak showing soft tannins with good palate construction it should be bottled in mid 2004.
2004 Verdelho-Viognier
Mid straw with green hues. An intense bouquet with tropical notes also featuring dried apricots, passionfruit, mango and pineapple aromas. Palate is rich and full bodied with a viscous blend of ripe fruit salad flavours and a slightly sweet, long fresh finish. Cellaring: up to 3 years. |
