Northampton
is a quaint town, classified as one of four Historical Towns in Western
Australia by the National Trust in 1993.
In 1848 Cornish and Welsh miners
began lead mining with copper mining soon after in 1855. Northampton was
declared a townsite in 1864. Nearby Port Gregory was used as a mineral port, and
a convict hiring station existed at Lynton.
1879 saw the first government railway in Western Australia. It ran from Geraldton to Northampton. The railway
station and tracks can still be seen, with the embankment of the old railway
bridge visible from the Cottages.
Other historic places of interest include:
- Chiverton
House Museum - with Herbarium, restored vintage vehicles & machinery.
- Gwalla Pioneer Cemetery.
- St. Mary’s Church and Old Convent - designed
by Monsignor Hawes.
- Williams’ original Drapery Store.

miners’ cottages.
