History
Cumberland is a county situated in the north-western corner of England. During the middle ages, England and Scotland disputed possession of the county, and border raids often centred on Carlisle. For many hundreds of years, Cumberland remained somewhat isolated from the rest of England. But, in the late 1700's, the mountain scenery of the county began to attract visitors. Today, the Lake District, about two-thirds of which lies in the county, is one of the most famous tourist regions of Britain.
John JOHNSON was employed as a farmer for seven years in Carlisle, Cumberland before he set sail for Australia in 1863. He arrived in Melbourne on the ship 'Shalimar' in January 1864. His wife Isabella nee ATKINSON and the first child, Mary Ann arrived in Victoria on the ship 'Sam Cearns' on 26th December 1865.
John mined at Blanket Flat, Daylesford for two years, then in the Ballarat district for about eight years. Then in 1874 he acquired three hundred and sixty acres of land at Tongala.
John & Isabella had ten children - Mary Ann, Margaret who married Albert George HURLSTON, Joseph, William who married Catherine SOPER, John Atkinson who married Lillian Elizabeth JAMIESON, James who married Agnes Evelyn Mary HURLSTON, Jabez Anthony who married Ellen Mary CLAYTON, Thomas Graham, Hannah Jane who married Christel Ernest BOSSE & Elizabeth Ellen who married Thomas James Tregonning TREVASKIS.
