In 1873 a significant event took place on the outskirts of Clunes. The men working the Lothair Mine, near the Railway Station, requested to be allowed to cease work on Saturday at noon, as this privilege had been granted to employees in all other mines. The director of the mine refused, and the men went on strike. At the Ballarat and Creswick mines, there were thousands of Chinese miners and it was decided by the director to bring these men in to work the mines. Several coach loads were on the way on the morning of 9th December 1873, and the news of them coming reached Clunes. The miners and their friends met the coaches on the Creswick Road, just outside the town boundary. They put up a determined resistance, and the police accompanying the party advised them to turn back. The coaches then crossed country to Tourello and came by the Ballarat Road, which would bring then nearest to the mine. In the meantime a large crowd had gathered behind a barricade of ploughs and carts, greeting the coaches with a shower of stones and other missiles. Sargeant Larner, who was in charge of the police accompanying the party, intercede, and persuaded those in charge to return the Chinese to their original camps.
In 1880 the 10 mines along the line of Quartz Reefs had produced gold to the value of £3,900,000 ($7.800,000). It is estimated that dividends paid to shareholders was over £1,000,000 ($2,000,000). 1901 had produced 50 tons of gold.
Clunes has now reverted to a quiet rural town rich in natural beauty and history, and offering many benefits to its residents and visitors alike. The Tullaroop Creek winds through the town and is a source of beauty and pleasure for all that visit there.
