What does Apus Peru mean? For
us, Peru is characterised by the great
Andes mountains. In the Quechua language of the Andes, "Apu"
refers to the spirit of each mountain which is not unlike a god. In every
snow capped peak, to smaller hills, there is an Apu. Each Apu is different,
with individual characteristics and personalities. They have in common
that from them emerge the life giving waters of springs, lakes and rivers,
as well as the forests and creatures that dwell in them. Like gods, the
Apus possess the power of giving and taking life. Andean people look first
to their local Apus and then to Mother Earth when they are undertaking
a pilgrimage or enterprise. The
name "Apus Peru" thus pays homage to the great mountains of
the Andes and to the spirit and the beliefs of the Andean people.

The treks offered by APUS PERU were all first explored by our management in the spirit of adventure in the Andes . They pored over maps, researched and talked with the local people. Since then, with the explosion in alternative treks due to the regulation of the Inca Trail, it has become much more common for people to head out on the Salkantay Trek or to Choquequirao. "Do
not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and
leave a trail."
Ralph Waldo Emerson We first hiked these routes with a spirit of discovery - we want to encapsulate this spirit in our tours, so you too can feel the thrill of breaking new ground. After working as a porter on the Inca Trail, Felix gained his Tourism degree and has since worked with several well known Cusco agencies. From Quillabamba, Felix is passionate about the high jungle region, as well as loving the mountains! He speaks Spanish, Quechua and English and leads many of our tours. A West Australian, Ariana is a journalist and currently pursuing Masters studies in the Development of third world nations. She has worked in tourism for 10 years, as an interterpretive guide and she specialises in environmental and educational interpretation. Ariana and her mother have backpacked extensively through Russia , China , Mongolia , Uzbekistan , Kyrgyzstan , India , Laos and Myanmar . Not unlike other backpackers they watched their pennies, ate local food, and looked for meaningful interaction with the locals. Since meeting in 2002, Felix and Ariana have explored little known places in Peru , Bolivia , Ecuador and Colombia . They always seek to get off the beaten track and far from the Gringo Trail, and it is this type of adventure they seek to offer in their tours. With experience in true adventure travel
in many parts of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador and having "been
there, and done that" Apus Peru are willing to custom design a tour
to suit your needs. It is the type of tour where you can immerse yourself
in the culture and understand these fascinating countries. Contact us for any adventure travel needs! apusperu@westnet.com.au
