WUNDOWIE
Birthplace of the Iron Industry in Western Australia

Where is Wundowie?
From Perth or the Hills
The town of Wundowie is situated 3 km north of Great Eastern Highway, with Hawke Avenue its main entrance. The road passes over the Mundaring-Kalgoorlie Golden Pipeline and the railway reserve Heritage Track. El Caballo Retreat and Roadhouse (within the Wundowie boundary) is an assuring landmark indicating that there is still a few more kilometres to go before reaching the clearly signed turn-off.

A more picturesque drive with views of both the local farming community and State Nature Reserves meanders from the Chidlow turn-off at Great Eastern Highway along the Old Northam Road, through the historic town of Wooroloo (Government Rd) until reaching the outer edge of Wundowie (along Werribee Rd). The continuous drive with its three name changes terminates alongside the Wundowie Foundry with the Retorts, the remnants of the original Wundowie Charcoal Iron & Steel clearly in sight. Turn left into Hawke Ave and you enter the tiny town of Wundowie.

From Toodyay direction:
From Toodyay Road turn left into Bailup Rd and follow the winding narrow bitumen alongside farming properties. Watch out for oncoming vehicles as you will need to move over to allow room for both vehicles to pass safely. Turn left into Burma road and enjoy a pleasant drive through farms and State Reserves. Burma Road widens considerably the closer you get to Wundowie. Note the Wundowie Go-Kart Track on your right, and the turn-off to the Golf Course on your left as you begin to slow down for your arrival at the western end of the town.

An alternative drive for more adventurous travellers from Toodyay is via Fernie Road  - a gravel/dirt road not easily found except by locals. Not recommended for your first visit.

From Northam:
Drive through Clackline and Bakers Hill before you reach the clearly signed turn-off to Wundowie. The town of Wundowie is situated 3 km north to the right of Great Eastern Highway, with Hawke Avenue its main entrance. The road passes over the Mundaring-Kalgoorlie Golden Pipeline and the railway reserve Heritage Track.  If you reach El Caballo Retreat and Roadhouse you've missed the turn-off!

A further exit/entrance east of the main Wundowie turn-off is Coates Rd, mainly used by those with local knowledge of the area. This road passes the original iron-ore pit used by Wundowie Charcoal, Iron and Steel (WCI)  in 1947.
