Our Town
During WWI a small timber
mill was built in the area, and as a result a small village of timber workers
was established. However it wasn't until after World War II that the town
really came into existence. In 1942 the Western Australian government carried
out a feasibility study with a view to establishing an iron and steel industry.
The following year it was
decided to establish a wood distillation and charcoal-iron plant (for the
production of pig iron). As a result of this decision, the town of Wundowie
came into existence in 1947 and the Wundowie Charcoal,
Iron And Steel plant began operating in 1948.
The Wundowie site was originally
selected as it was on the main railway line, in close proximity to the
city (Perth) and the nearby Mundaring-Kalgoorlie (water) pipeline, surrounded
by extensive forest, had local iron ore deposits, and limestone and magnesium
ore were obtainable from various sources within WA.
Wundowie townsite is accessed
via Great Eastern Highway. Alternative routes
include Toodyay Road, and the Old Northam Road via Chidlow. A limited bus
service is also available |
