Vintage Loudspeakers.

This page lists various speakers and loudspeakers, mostly new old stock from the 50's, 60's and 70's.

All prices are inclusive of GST. I am able to organise freight, if required. Cost varies with destination.

For schools wishing to order, I am able to provide ABN and invoice the school.

I am also able to install these speaker drivers if required. There is an extra charge for this off course, which depends on the time required. Please note that some of these speakers have the slide on connectors, but some, like the Jensen, Rola etc have connectors that require soldering. Soldering this sort of connection is not difficult, but does require a good solder joint as there is a bit of current flowing, and if something comes loose, well, your amp may not appreciate it.

Quad 4 x 12 Speaker Cabinet.

Quad 4 x 12 speaker cabinet Quad 4 x 12 speaker cabinet

This is a second hand cabinet in which I have installed some of my stockpile of speakers. I have been playing around a bit with mixing speakers in a cabinet. This one contains 2 McKenzie 1275GP sepakers and 2 Guya GSG.300509 speakers.

The Mckenzie speakers are brand new, made in England. McKenzie were used in Marshal amps prior to them moving to Celestion. The Guya speakers have had some use, made in Japan, and used in Guyatone equipment. Both speakers I have found to be pretty reasonable. Together this cab, to me, sounds very nice. It's probably not as eficient as a cab with Celestions, but the sound is great.

This cab is made from high grade 11 ply timber. Very well constructed, and is on castors. All speakers are 8 ohm. The cabinet is wired up in 8 ohm.

Price: $400

Laney 2 x 10 Speaker Cabinet.

Laney 2 x 10 Speaker Cabinet Laney 2 x 10 Speaker Cabinet

This is a second hand Laney cabinet in which I have installed some of my stockpile of speakers. This one contains 2 x 10" Fender Blue Label speakers. They are 16 ohm speakers wired in parralel, so this is an 8 ohm cabinet. The speakers are an original 70's unit that has been unused till now. They have been sitting on a shelf in the warehouse that was, in the day, the Fender dealer in Autralia, to be used as spare parts. The codes on the side of the speakers are: 014527 16 ohms 40763. As well as 2857932. Both speakers have the same code, so they were made at the same time by the same manufacturer. The latter suggests its manufacturer is Rola, either here in Australia or in England, and was made in the 32nd week of 1979. Does not state how many watts. I imagine there may not be to many of these made by Rola versions around.

I am able to install any of the 10" speakers listed on the Speakers Page. This is a closed back cabinet. It sounds exceptional! If you like the bright clean Fender like sound, with that crystal clear and clean top end then this will not disappoint.

This cab is a standard Laney thing. Reasonably well made, from MDF I think.

Price: $300

15 inch Speakers

McKenzie 15-100 GP Speaker

McKenzie 15-100 GP Speaker McKenzie 15-100 GP Speaker

This 15 inch speaker is unused, and brand new old stock. Been sitting in it's box since the 1970's. Made in England.

Don't know much about McKenzie speakers, other than they were used in Marshall amps prior to the use of Celestion's. I imagine that the GP part of the model number means General Purpose. Comes with a speaker grill installed as shown in the photograph. I have installed it in a sepaker cab and it sounds really good. In my view, for guitar, it sounded better than the Celestion or the Fender 15" shown here. It is really solidly built. I'd use this as a good working guitar speaker any day.

Price $100.

Celestion 15-100 Speaker

Celestion 15-100 Speaker Celestion 15-100 Speaker

15 inch speaker. Brand new. I have 3 of these. Can't seem to find much on this speaker. Not sure, as it's not a "G", if it's a guitar speaker or just general purpose. I know they were used in Laney PA speakers and fold back boxes and sounded great like that. I have installed one in a cabinet and it works pretty well with guitar.

I presume it handles 100 watts, 4 ohm.

Price $100.

Fender P.S.15 guitar speaker

Fender P.S.15 guitar speaker

I have 2 of these. Both exactly the same, and were new in the early 70's. These are the ones made by Cerwin Vega, and originally used in the Fender Vibrasonic amplifier of around 1972.

The one shown here has had some use when it was new, but has been unused for at least 30 years. It was in a large cabinet untill last year when storage finally became an issue. The other one has never been used, and is still in it's originak cardboard box.

I have installed one in a cabinet and it sounded pretty good. Lacking a little in highs I guess, probably due to the fact that it is an absolutely enormous magnet. Must be rated at something like 300 watts RMS at least.

Price: $200 each

12 inch Speakers

Jensen Concert Fidelity 12 inch twin cone Speaker

Jensen Concert Fidelity 12 inch twin cone Speaker Jensen Concert Fidelity 12 inch twin cone Speaker

This speaker has had some use, but I'd say very little, and has been sitting around in a box for just about all of it's life so far. It looks to be in excellent condition. The cone looks perfect.

I'd say it's 8 ohms. DC resistance measures at 6.5 ohms on the main winding. This is where it gets interesting. There are 2 extra wires coming from the magnet. Putting a battery across these wires gives the usual healthy response. I can't however measure any DC resistance at all across these leads. After putting a battery across it very briefly, and then joining the 2 leads together as to short it, also gives a responce from the speaker, as if something is discharging. I'm guessing that there is perhaps some form of piezo in there? or some form of capacitance that is open circuit to DC.

Greatly appreciate any advise as to how this speaker works. I'm suspecting it is not a guitar speaker. I haven't hooked it up to any amplifier at this stage. I'll wait to learn whats going on here before I do that.

Made in Chicago USA.

Price $200.

Rola Plessey 12U50 Guitar Speaker

Rola Plessey 12U50 Speaker Rola Plessey 12U50 Speaker

There are 2 of these left, brand new old stock. Made in Australia in the 70's! One is stamped 518/15 and is a 15 ohm speaker, the other is stamped 517/8 and is an 8 ohm speaker.

These were developed in the 70's in response to the increasing popularity of the 2N3055/2N2955 -50W transistor amplifier, and represented an increase in power handling over the previous Plessey models. Used in various Australian made guitar amps at the time.

Price $150 each

Rola Model M Speaker

Rola Model M Speaker Rola Model M Speaker

There are 2 of these available. Basically brand new, but old stock. Been sitting around in its box for, well, since the 60's or earlier? Made in Australia. They have some damage to the felt dust cover in the centre of the cone. This does not effect the performance of the speaker at all. One has some scuf marks on the side.

Thanks to Daniel I now have some more technical info on this unit. It is a model 12M, and according to the Rola specs it is part of the high flux series, designed for use in "high grade console type receivers and radiograms". It is 2 ohm impedance at 400c.p.s, 7 watts power handling. The F27 cone has a fundamental resonance of 85 c.p.s.

The impedance transformer fitted is the COL53, with a load impedance of 10,000 ohms and has a center tap. All this info can be found on the Kevin Chant Website.

I have 2 left at this stage.

Price $80 each

Rola 12" Speaker

Rola 12 inch Speaker Rola 12 inch Speaker

I am told this is a Rola speaker, despite not having Rola on it anywhere. This speaker did have some issues with the braids, which have been repaired by Open Ear Audio, and now works perfectly. Has had very little if any use.

The number stamped on the frame look to be 434115 or 454115, and 012P00, or 012POO, and 5EAK, or 5CAK.

Looks to be 16 ohm , and I'd guess around 25 to 30 watts? Sounds very good, and the sort of thing just right for an old Australian guitar amp, which I imagine it would have been designed for.

Price $100

McKenzie 1275 GP Speaker

McKenzie 1275 GP Speaker McKenzie 1275GP Speaker

This 12 inch speaker is unused, and brand new old stock. Been sitting in it's box since the 1970's. Made in England. There are 4 available.

Don't know much about McKenzie speakers, other than they were used in Marshall amps prior to the use of Celestion's, and also used in Torque amps. I imagine that the GP part of the model number means General Purpose. Comes with a speaker grill installed as shown in the photograph.

With these 4 you can load up that quad box and have it set up just like an old Marshall.

Price $100.

Guyatone GSB-300330 12 inch Speaker

Guyatone GSB-300330 12 inch Speaker Guyatone GSB-300330 12 inch Speaker

Made in Japan. Brand new. 2 available. Very little info on the net about these speakers, but at a guess I'd say they were used in Guyatone amplifiers, and possibly other Japanese mande amps as well. I have tested one in an amp and am actually not that inpressed. The sort of thing one would use to keep your guyatone equipment original, but there are better sounding units available.

8 Ohm, 40 watts.

Price $50.

Guya 12 inch Speakers

Guya 12 inch Speaker Guya 12 inch Speaker

It's not stated on the speaker, but Guya were a Japanese company, and one speaker is labelled as made in Japan. Model number is GSG.300509. Both speakers also have SK2136EL stamped on them.

There are 2 of these available. One is missing the label. Both these speakers had issues with the braids, which were easily repaired by Open Ear Audio. Dick form Open Ear also thought that these looked like Celestions.

They do sound great, and like some sort of Celestion to me.

8 Ohm, and I'm guessing around 60 watts, by the size and weight of the magnets.

Price $300 for the pair.

Guya 12 inch Speaker

Phillips AD5200PM Twin cone 12 inch Speaker

Twin cone 12 inch Speaker Twin cone 12 inch Speaker

This is an old Phillips twin cone speaker. It is unused. The solder tags have never been soldered on to. Identifiers on the back read "AD5200PM" and "1164AH". On the cone are the "8673/547?" with the last digit there being to much of a smug to read. This seems to be a 15 ohm, judging by the meter reading. Apparently were rated around 20 watts.

I have tested this speaker in a cabinet using a guitar. It a was a real surprise. Sounds absolutely magic! Nice clean top end. Seemed very efficient as well.

Price $400.

Phillips AD12100/M8 Twin cone 12 inch Speakers

Twin cone 12 inch Speaker Twin cone 12 inch Speaker

There are 2 of these available. Phillips twin cone speakers that are quite rare, and sought after by vintage audio enthusiasts.

I have known these speakers since they were new. Purchased by a friend who bought 10 of them back in the early 70's. 8 were used in 2 PA columns. The other 2, these 2, were fitted to another 4 x 12 column that was never used. The PA was used around 5 or 6 times, and thereafter all the speakers sat in the spare room with various other amps and speakers and things. I purchased them all in 1988, and sold the 2 complete columns. I kept these 2 speakers as I liked the sound of them. Used them in for a couple of solo acoustic jobs. They have had very little use, and are in perfect condition.

Price $400 for the pair.

Foster 300K0500 12 inch Speaker

Foster 12 inch Speaker Foster 12 inch Speaker

Foster 12". Made in Japan. Never heard of these as an instrument speaker but the sort of thing used as OEM in various amps. Tested this one and it sound pretty good. In my view it is better than the Guyatone 12" also listed here.

8 Ohm, 50 watts.

Price $50.

I have tested a few out and they sound great, very clean and smooth with very nice bright and clean top end. To me they sound exactly like the Fender 10" that I have also listed here.

Price $50 each.

Etone 141 10 inch Speaker

Etone 141 10 inch Speaker Etone 141 10 inch Speaker

This speaker may have had some use, but it is in perfect condition. 16 OHM. Made in Australia.

I have tested in a cabinet with a guitar amp and it sounds great, particularly with distortion and turned up a bit.

I don't know it's wattage rating but it is a heavy speaker with a huge magnet. Would have to be around 80 or 100 watts.

Price $100.

Fender Blue Label 10 inch Speakers

Fender Blue Label 10 inch Speaker Fender Blue Label 10 inch Speaker

I have 2 of these, used, but in very good condition. The codes on the side are: 014527 16 ohms 40763.

I have tested both in my little 30watt amp, and they both sound perfect. In comparison to my 10" Jensen, it behaved just as you would expect a Fender to sound.

Price $250 for the pair.

Fane 10 inch Speakers Fane 10 inch Speakers

Brand new, 3 of these available. On the speaker frame is written "10435" and 829/89. On the box the speaker comes in is written "K25". They look similar in construction to the McKenzie speakers I also have for sale.

Made in Batley West Yorks, England. Unable to find anything these speakers.

There are no mounting holes in these speakers, (which would not be that hard to drill), so they were probably secured in by some form of clamps.
