Musaics stocks new and second hand instruments. All second hand instruments are guaranteed to be in as good if not better playing condition than when new. In replacing for example rubber parts on xylophones and metallophones, I often use better quality materials than used in manufacture. Please contact me if you are after something in particular. As Musaics primary focus is the repair, and sale of tuned percussion I can guarantee that all tuned percussion instruments for sale are also instruments I can service, and supply parts for. Any class room xylophone or metallophone for example can be purchased with complete confidence with regard to its ongoing use, no matter how harsh the class room environment. I can sometimes supply genuine parts, but failing that I can pretty much make anything for these instruments.

I can supply a range of concert and classroom instruments from Korogi, Premier, Saito, Suzuki and Angel.

All prices are inclusive of GST. I am able to organise freight, the cost of which varies with destination. For schools wishing to order, I am able to provide ABN and invoice the school.

Regarding warranties on items listed here, this will vary. All new instruments when indicated as new, are covered by the manufacturers warranty. Any tuned percussion items I have listed as second hand refurbished I guarantee for 3 months, and possibly longer, at my discretion, and depending on the situation. All tuned percussion manufactured by myself I am happy to guarantee for the life of that instrument. This means anything excluding normal wear and tear of normal or extreme usage, and can be taken to include for example changes in tuning of xylophone bars, which I will re tune free of charge for their life. It does not include for example perishing of rubber components, which is part of an instruments wear and maintenance.

Anything needing to be returned will need to be returned to Musaics, at the cost of the purchaser, at which time I will repair, replace or refund as required.

Percussion Mallets

I can supply a range of mallets designed for use with most classroom instruments as well as a range of Premier orchestral mallets for various instruments. Mallets come in various sizes and hardness to suite various instruments. The general rule is, the higher up the range of the instrument, the harder the mallet needs to be to enable the instrument to speak. So, for example, you would want a softer and larger head on a mallet for a bass xylophone, and a smaller and harder head on a soprano xylophone. Using a hard mallet on a bass xylophone tends to bring out the higher harmonics, or, if you like, gives the sound a harder edge, and does not allow the fundamental note of the bar to sound. This might be required in specific situations, but mostly it just sounds unpleasant. A soft mallet used on a soprano xylophone or a glock just does not give much sound, and often results in the bar being bounced off the instrument. Having said this, there are times when this rule may not apply, i.e. using a soft felt mallet on a soprano metallophone can sound very nice, if a little soft.
Mallets that I manufacture are made with grey PVC handles, that can stand a reasonable amount of punishment (certainly better than wooden handles). I also provide a range of mallets sourced from elsewhere.

Musaics Orff Style Bass Xylophone

Musaics Orff Bass Xylophone

This classroom xylophone is a full 2 octave instrument with rosewood bars, made right here in Melbourne by myself. This means that all parts, including spare bars etc are easily available. Bars are carefully overtone tuned. The boxes are made from good quality plywood that won't split or de-laminate. I know it looks a little unconventional, but the design is the result of my attempt to make a bass xylophone that is as light as possible. It's not the smallest bass available, after all it is a full 2 octave, but it weighs 13 kg, which I'm pretty sure is the lightest bass around. This I felt to be an important factor if these instruments are to be portable.

Musaics Bass Xylophone is demonstrated in this video. Please open this in a new tab.

Price $850 (GST inclusive), making this the cheapest 2 octave bass xylophone in Australia, as far as I know.

It's not the smallest alto available, after all it is a full 2 octave. The bars are 37 mm wide, which is wider than many other Alto's. As a result this instrument will accomodate 2 children if needed. 1 octave each! Comes with 2 pairs of mallets.

Price $500 (GST inclusive), making this the cheapest 2 octave Alto xylophone in Australia, as far as I know. I only have 1 of these. This was my demonstration instrument, but as I no longer plan to make any it is looking for a new home.

Suzuki Bass Xylophone

Suzuki Bass Xylophone

This is a Suzuki bass chromatic extension (the add-on part with the sharps and flats) that I have converted to a diatonic instrument. It is a new instrument, but the original bars, being the sharps, have been retuned. Some bars I have made myself, so look a lttle different in colour to the originals. This instrument only goes up to a G, so is one note short of the normal Suzuki bass. Also, there is a greater than usual variation in the volume of some notes. The volume of the notes always varies with these sort of instruments, but with this conversion it tends to be a little more so.

Basically it is a cheap alternative to a bass xylophone. It's perfect if all you want is an instrument for basic ostinato type bass lines etc. Comes with extra F#'s and Bb bars.

The Suzuki bass xylophone normally retails for $995. This price: $250

Deagan Xylophone Deagan Xylophone

This is a project that is part of the long and growing list of projects that I may never get round to, so, time to clear out.

It's a portable Deagan xylophone, that is in need of some repair to the frame before putting back together. I have had the meatl plates with all the Deagan numbers etc re-chromed, various screws chromed. The orginal screws for the bar supports are also there, in original condition.

The bars have gone about 1/2 of a semitone sharp. Not unusual for bars this old. I am happy to retune them. They are "quint" tuned. I won't go into this aspect of tuning for those who just went "HUH?". Lots of stuff about this on the net.

Bass Tone Bars

These large bass tone bars are pitched in the octave below the bass xylophone, so the low C is 2 octaves below middle The C bar is 75 cm long, so they are quite large, for just one note.
