Banabungi is a village located on the northern tip of Kadatua Island, some 20 kilometers south of Baubau city, Buton, Sulawesi.

The village is known to have existed for some 400 years. It had a pre-1990 population of nominally 2,000 souls. At that time it had no infrastructure, an underutilised and inadequate primary school, no fresh water, no electricity, no shops, no roads, no vehicles, no income and a great deal of sickness.

Since the time SAO Buton has been involved in the development of this village, the standard of education has grown to the point where there is now a junior high school in the town, the population has grown to almost 4,000, there is widespread income and little sickness. The town suffers an inadequate water supply, but there are steps to ensure this will be overcome in the near future.
